Now that Hip Hop has hit the mainstream, many people have the impression that it’s a musical form with very little substance, focused almost exclusively on style. The focus of popular rap has moved away from making people conscious of social ills, instead emphasizing hyper-materialism and unchecked hedonism. Many among the Hip Hop community lament the lack of popular “conscious” rap: lyrics and production primarily concerned with exploring ideas about society, consciousness, history, and life. Where have the conscious rappers gone?

You’ll find two of the best in Fullerton, Orange County: St. Eve and m[]ndless, the Decyplz.

“Spoken from the heart and delivered by the soul” is a concept that St. Eve (a.k.a. Steveso) has embraced since first picking up the microphone. He believes that music is a reflection of where you came from, who you are and where you’re going. St. Eve grew bored of repetitious rhymes and stories of money, cars and women, and at a summer concert, found his calling in the underground. From that moment on, Steven So, finally realized the true meaning behind expression through song.

M[ ]ndless picked up Turntablism in ‘96. When he heard Q-bert refer to turntables as musical instruments, something opened up in his head, and he’s been stuck to them ever since. After learning how to skratch by watching countless DJ videos and battles, he got involved in the rave circuit spinning breakbeats and trance, and around 2000, he started producing Hip Hop and formed Decyplz with St. Eve.

They’ve just dropped their first album, “Middle Ground.” Let’s get into their heads.
